About Me
My name is Claire Tahiro and as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with years spent navigating the high-stakes environments of Level I and II Trauma centers, I’ve learned that the distance between clinical excellence and "Level Zero" is paved with meticulous documentation and a lot of caffeine. My background in nursing education has taught me that the best way to survive an ACS verification site visit isn't just memorizing the "Grey Book"—it’s translating dry regulatory standards into practical, real-world interventions that actually save lives. Whether I’m closing a complex PIPS loop or teaching staff why SBIRT alcohol screenings require more than just a pamphlet, my goal is to bridge the gap between rigorous research and the bedside. I’ve survived enough audits to know that while earning that gold star is serious business, a little wit and a Doctorate-level deep dive into evidence-based practice are the best ways to keep the gray hairs at bay.
My Qualifications: From bedside to boardroom
Welcome to Trauma Tidbits & ACS Audits! If you’ve ever wondered who has the authority to translate the often-intimidating American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards into plain English, you’re in the right place. My name is Claire P. Tahiro, and I hold a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, which provides the evidence-based foundation necessary to scrutinize and improve trauma systems.
I’m not just talking theory; I’ve lived in the trenches. My experience spans years as an Emergency Department Nurse in busy Level I Pediatric and Level I Adult Trauma Centers (and a couple Level II facilities). This hands-on experience gives me a real-world perspective on what happens when the standards meet the chaos of a busy emergency room. I hold certifications that keep me current, including a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN).
Now, in my role as a Trauma Services Performance Improvement Coordinator, I live and breathe the PIPS process—identifying areas for improvement and implementing interventions that meet the rigorous 2022 ACS standards. I bridge the gap between clinical care and the meticulous documentation required for successful verification. Furthermore, my years as a Nursing Instructor mean I know how to break down complex topics into digestible, actionable content for you.
This blog is here to use that expertise to help you not just survive, but thrive, during your next audit.
